Sainsbury's has become the first third-party retailer outside of the United States to offer Amazon's, "Just Walk Out" technology, which allows shoppers to skip checkout queues when making purchases. Sainsbury's Holborn Circus facility has been equipped with the technology, making it a SmartShop Pick & Go that allows consumers to purchase things by scanning their SmartShop smartphone upon admission and exit. It is not necessary to have an Amazon Prime membership to shop at this site. Amazon joined with Starbucks, earlier this month to develop a new idea that combines Starbucks Pickup and Amazon Go. Sainsbury's stock has increased by 29% so far this year. The stock of Amazon is up 7.6%. The S&P 500 index, has gained 22.3% over the same time period.
