A Kroger representative claimed on Friday that a press release claiming the retailer will take "bitcoin currency" this holiday season is false.
The announcement was made on Kroger's investor relations website. It was unclear how the press release ended up on the company's website.
Kroger has not provided any new information or issued an official comment.
The press announcement was also published on PR Newswire. A call for comment from the press release distributor went unanswered.
The false press release comes after Walmart was the target of another crypto hoax a few weeks ago when a bogus news release advertising the retailer's relationship with litecoin was leaked.
