On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the West for growing tensions in Europe, claiming that the West had miscalculated the outcome of the Cold War.

Putin told senior military leaders that Russia will respond "adequately" to any Western aggression and that the country's army would be further developed.

Russia has gathered tens of thousands of troops along the border with Ukraine, demanding that NATO fail to accept the former Soviet republic as a member and ensure that no weapons or troops will be placed there.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that the US had deployed around 8,000 troops near Russian borders and that the US, together with NATO allies, often flew strategic bomber planes close to Russia.

NATO's efforts to include the Ukrainian army in the alliance's activities pose a security threat, according to Shoigu.

Earlier on Tuesday, a senior Russian official stated that discussions between Moscow and Washington on the issue of security guarantees sought by Russia had already begun, and that there was a possibility of both parties reaching an understanding.
