Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she'll give Congress an update "within the next day or two" on how long lawmakers have to raise or suspend the debt limit before the government runs out of money.

“We may be able to get past Dec. 3rd, we may have the resources to do that, but not a great deal of time after that,” Yellen said in an interview that aired Tuesday on National Public Radio.

Since last month, the Treasury has used so-called extraordinary measures to avoid running out of cash. Earlier this month, the department announced that it had spent $182 billion of the approximately $369 billion in cash made available through such measures.

Last month, lawmakers enacted a short-term increase in the debt limit. Congressional leaders have yet to specify how they intend to address the debt ceiling in the coming weeks.
